I've never really got the whole indigo/violet thing. They're all purple to me, so please don't send in comments about my faulty differentiation between the two. They're all just pretty purple pictures of Nippon. (Like the alliteration?)
Actually the dye indigo was very important in the Edo period. Commoners couldn't use silk, and indigo (from the leaves) was about the best natural dye around. Even today it's still a very popular colour for the yukata (summer kimono.)
