Mt Koya is a 900 m plateau surrounded by 8 peaks, said to represent the the eight petals of the Sacred Lotus, the basis of the mandala and the eight deities.
Everywhere you look is unique architecture. Many of the structures in Koyasan are listed as World Heritage.
One of the beautiful 3D embroidered wall panels in the temple.
All buildings are regularly rebuilt using traditional methods (mortise & tenon, dowels - not one nail). Some roofs are compressed bark of the sugi (Japanese cedar).
