day 233 - Hakodate 2 - seafood and gaijin...

The camera flash does very weird things to squid...
(Hakodate Morning Markets.)

A very hairy crab.
(Morning Markets.)

We visited the Cemetery for Foreigners (one of Commodore Perry's mariners died here and was buried in 1854), but sadly we missed the Grave of An Extra Newspaper Distributor.

St Nikolai arrived in Japan to begin a mission  in 1861. The Russian Orthodox church here is dedicated to him and contains his remains.

This far north many signs also have Russian and Korean. Russia is just a ferry-ride away. We're celebrating by drinking bargain-basement Smirnoff.
